How To Block Semalt Referrer Spam

I recently wrote a post about blocking referrer spam appearing in Google Anayltics coming from semalt.com which can be found here.

In the post I wrote about a method of blocking the bots landing on your website by using the removal tool provided on the Semalt website, however after further research it’s possible that they may be using this tool to gather a list of active webmasters to whom they will send further spam. I’d therefore strongly recommend against using this tool, and anyway why you should be taking the time to opt out of something that you never opted into in the first place?

Shortly after “removing” my URL from the Semalt crawler bot I began noticing referrer spam coming from a domain named kambasoft.com, I also wrote about this here.

Semalt’s tactics are angering webmasters around the globe. Just take a look at some of the comments left on twitter: https://twitter.com/hashtag/semalt

Now I’m going to keep this post short & sweet but basically after carrying out a bit more research it looks like there may be a few more domains linked to this whole referrer spam ordeal. Being the nice guy that I am I’ve decided to put a .htaccess file together which I’m going to keep updated with a list of all the known referrer spam domains related to Semalt. The file does the simple task of blocking the bots from accessing your website & appearing in your analytics, but don’t worry – it let’s everybody else & all the “good” bots access your website as normal.

If you’ve never used a .htaccess file before all you need to do is simply copy the code from the box below, paste it into notepad, save it as “.htaccess” (without quotes) and upload it to the root directory of your  webserver.
